"Penance Stare! Look into my eyes! Have a nice death!"
The Penance Stare is Ghost Rider's signature, and most powerful, attack. Ghost Rider grabs his opponent and locks eyes with them, making his victim feel every bit of pain that individual has ever inflicted on anyone else in their lifetime. This is one of the most powerful command grabs in the game and has good range. After the attack, the victim is left in a burning crumple state, allowing for an easy followup combo. Because it is only one hit, combos following Penance Stare are not yet heavily affected by hit decay, enabling follow combos to easily KO the victim. Since Penance Stare is a throw, it will not connect on opponents who are in hitstun or guardstun nor will it work on airborne enemies. A whiffed Penance Stare is easily punished, especially by challengers jumping straight up to avoid it.
- This hyper has a very short window of invincibility during it's startup. You can cancel your guard with X-Factor & grab your opponent to blow through your opponent's attacks at close range.
- You can extend the range of Penace Stare with kara-cancelling. Cancel standing M into Penance Stare immediately to extend the range by roughly 2 characters' lengths away. If you are too close, standing M will connect and Penace Stare will miss entirely.
- In the 90's Fantastic Four cartoon series, Ghost Rider defeated Galactus with a single Penance Stare, which was actually two beams that came from his eye sockets.
- Despite its power being based on the suffering its target caused to the innocent, Ghost Rider's penance stare will do the same amount of damage to anyone in the game, good or evil. It's also supposed to backfire when used against the mentally unbalanced (such as Deadpool, who, in the comics, turned the Ghost Rider back into Johnny Blaze and showed Deadpool a "highlight reel") and those without a soul (such as Sentinel). This was obviously done for balancing issues.
